President Nikenike Vurobaravu has officially signed a revocation order cancelling the commutation of 70 inmates—a decision he had initially endorsed on May 2. The commutations were previously gazetted but have now been nullified.

Principal Private Secretary to the Head of State, Clarence Marae, confirmed the revocation, saying that although the President signed the document yesterday, the official gazettal is expected today.

Marae said the initial commutations were approved due to damage sustained to prison facilities, which led the Office of the President to support early releases or reduced sentences. That process, he added, has now concluded.

“With the revocation signed, the authorities responsible for overseeing the inmates must now explore alternative solutions,” he said.

Marae said the Minister responsible for Correctional Services, together with the Director of Correctional Services, must now work on a suitable approach to manage the situation.

He also pointed out that the Department of Correctional Services has powers under the Correctional Services Act to make similar decisions if required, suggesting that other options remain available to address prison overcrowding or infrastructure issues.
