The Vanuatu judo team returned home to a hero’s welcome after an impressive showing at the recently concluded Pacific Mini Games in Palau, finishing second overall in the judo competition.
They secured a total of five medals — two gold, one silver, and two bronze — placing them just behind powerhouse Tahiti, which topped the medal table with seven medals.
The remarkable feat also saw Vanuatu finishing ahead of Australia, who trailed with three medals.
The country’s first gold medals of the games were won by young judokas Priscilla Monthuel and Kaina Derlieu, who both dominated their debut matches in the women’s 52kg and 57kg divisions, respectively. Veteran judoka Anna Bumseng added a silver to the tally, while Allan Monthuel clinched a bronze. In the team event, Vanuatu secured an additional bronze medal to round off their haul.
Vice President of the Vanuatu Judo Federation (VJF), Nazario Fiakaifonu, expressed his heartfelt pride in the team’s achievements.
“My heart is full and contented to see the judokas’ performance in this regional event,” he said.
He noted that the team’s preparation faced challenges, including being forced to relocate training from the EX FOL complex to a thatched hut in Pango Village with limited space.
“Despite this, the judokas performed with heart. They are a very young team, but they fought with pride because they are proud to represent their country,” Fiakaifonu added.
He described the moment the Vanuatu national anthem played inside the judo arena in Palau as one of immense pride and joy, saying that welcoming the medalists back at the airport was emotional and unforgettable.
Fiakaifonu extended his gratitude to the Japanese Embassy and JICA for making it possible to have a Japanese volunteer coach, Shiho Kakizawa, guide the team.
He also thanked Julien Brulard, the ‘Judo Nomad’, for joining the Vanuatu squad in Palau and helping prepare the athletes.
He acknowledged sponsors Vanuatu Beverage and Pacific Suppliers for their vital support. “Without their backing, these results would not have been possible,” he said.
The Vanuatu Judo Federation now looks ahead with renewed hope, inspired by the achievements of its young judokas who continue to put the nation on the regional map in the sport.
