Vanuatu’s national women’s football team will now face Tahiti for the 5th and 6th place playoff next week in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2025, after finishing third in Group B.

Despite a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fiji yesterday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the Vanuatu side, led by coach Robert Yalou, fell short of a semi-final berth due to a lower goal difference than the Fiji Kulas.

The match began with drama early on when Fiji’s captain, Jotivini Tabua, was shown a red card in the 19th minute for violent conduct following a clash with Vanuatu’s Nellie Vuti.

This left the Fijian side playing with 10 players for the remainder of the game.

Vanuatu capitalised on their advantage in the 31st minute when star striker Leimata Simon netted a stunning goal out of reach of Fiji goalkeeper Emily Esposito, slotting the ball beautifully into the top right corner.

Simon’s effort marked her fifth goal of the tournament, sealing a 1-0 lead for Vanuatu at half-time.

Despite another free shot opportunity, Vanuatu could not extend their lead when Jane Alatoa’s attempt failed to connect well with a header.

Fiji fought back fiercely, with substitute Narieta Leba putting pressure on Vanuatu’s defence, but goalkeeper Amelia Reddy produced a series of crucial saves to deny the hosts any equaliser.

Both teams made late substitutions in the 84th minute as the intensity grew in search of a decisive second goal.

Vanuatu’s forwards Jane Alatoa and winger Noella Metoriki were brought off to inject fresh legs into the attack.

However, a last-minute decisive free kick by Henriette Sangul sailed over the crossbar, and five minutes of added time saw no further goals from the Fiji side.

Simon’s goal was the only goal of the tournament. Simon has scored all five goals for Vanuatu in the tournament so far-three against Tonga, one against Solomon Islands, and one yesterday.

Meanwhile, Vanuatu’s goalkeeper Amelia Reddy was named player of the match for her crucial savings in their match against Fiji yesterday.

With this result, the Solomon Islands finish top of Group B and will face Samoa in the semi-finals, while Fiji advances to meet Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, Tonga will play the Cook Islands for the 7th place playoff.

The Vanuatu squad now sets their sights on Tahiti as they aim to finish their campaign on a high note.
