Para athletes who competed in the recent National Para-Athletics Championship in Port Vila have returned home with not just medals, but memories to last a lifetime.

As they departed from the Hibiscus Motel — their accommodation for the weeklong event — the athletes expressed overwhelming joy and pride at being part of a national competition.

For many, it was their first time traveling away from their home islands, making the experience even more significant.

The SANMA para-athletics squad had a particularly impressive showing, collecting six gold and two silver medals. The team celebrated not just their athletic achievements but also the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and experience new places and people.

“What an incredible and enjoyable moment,” one athlete shared. “It wasn’t just about the competition — it was about growing and exploring.”

Team SHEFA also made a strong impact, earning medals in shot put, javelin, and track events.

Coach Lilian Melissa Hango expressed gratitude to her athletes for their outstanding performance and encouraged them to maintain their physical and mental well being beyond the competition.

“I sincerely want to thank them,” she said. “It is not always that people living with special needs get the chance to go out there or perform to the best of their abilities. This event has given them a new vision and understanding — that we are all equal, regardless of ability.”

Coach Hango also extended heartfelt appreciation to the Vanuatu Paralympic Committee (VPC) for their role in ensuring the smooth organisation of the event.

Sanma Team Manager Ruben Lovuesisi echoed her sentiments, noting that for many of the athletes, this was their first exposure to modern conveniences such as staying in motels — a significant moment in their lives.

The championship was more than a sporting event; it was a celebration of inclusivity, resilience, and the unifying power of sport.
