Twelve new women referees have joined the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) Referee Department to help grow women’s football officiating across the country.

VFF Referee Development Officer (RDO), Joel Hopkins, confirmed yesterday that five of the new referees come from Santo, four from Port Vila, two from Malampa Province, and one from Torba Province.

The referees are travelling to Port Vila to officiate at the VFF Women’s Champions League, where they will make their debut at the country’s highest-level women’s football competition.

The milestone comes after years of declining referee numbers in Vanuatu, a situation that left the country with only one FIFA-badged assistant referee and very few officials recognised by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).

Since taking up the role of Referee Development Officer last year, Hopkins said one of his key priorities has been to increase the number of qualified match officials and improving refereeing standards across the country.

He expressed hope that the 12 women referees will continue their officiating journey and make a lasting contribution to football in Vanuatu while helping to challenge stereotypes about women in sport.

”They are breaking barriers and proving that women can perform just as well as men in football officiating,” Hopkins said.

The latest achievement builds on earlier progress made under Hopkins’ leadership.

During last year’s VFF Champions League, a 14-year-old referee officiated at the national competition for the first time, demonstrating that age is no barrier when young officials are given the opportunity to develop.

Female referee, Delvine Joel, said this is a good sign for woman in football and with the help of the RDO and instructors they will continue to officiate and be part of the game.

She said despite women’s football is slowly progressing they are happy to keep on representing the women on the pitch.

The addition of the 12 women referees represents another important milestone in the VFF’s efforts to strengthen its referee department while creating more opportunities for women and young officials across Vanuatu.
