The Port Vila Football Association (PVFA) has received a boost for the development of women’s football following a donation of VT1,618,857 from the visiting Avalon School girls’ football team from Australia.

The amount was raised over the past six months through cake sales, barbecues, and other fundraising activities organised by the team before travelling to Vanuatu.

It was presented to the PVFA President, Harry Atisson, yesterday.

Assistant Coach Stuart Bensley said the donation reflects the team’s commitment to supporting the growth of girls’ and women’s football in Port Vila and across Vanuatu.

“Our goal is to help develop the women’s game by providing resources that can be used to purchase equipment and support programmes and competitions that will benefit young female footballers,” he said.

He added that although Avalon has visited Vanuatu over the past three years, this was the first time the school’s girls’ team had travelled to the country, creating an opportunity to strengthen the sporting partnership between Australia and Vanuatu.

During their visit, the Avalon girls played three friendly matches against Port Vila League clubs.

They faced Shepherds United FC in their opening match, followed by Galaxy FC, who claimed victory, before concluding their tour yesterday with a match against Tafea FC.

Bensley also expressed hope that the partnership would continue beyond this year’s visit.

“We hope to host a girls’ team from Vanuatu next year to continue building this friendship through football,” he said.

President Atisson thanked the Avalon team for their generosity, assuring them that the funds would be managed responsibly.

“We are grateful for this generous contribution. The money will be properly accounted for, and we will provide a report back to the Avalon team to maintain a transparent and accountable partnership, “he said.

He said the funding would play an important role in supporting the development of women’s football in Port Vila, including the purchase of equipment and the organisation of competitions.

Atisson also confirmed that a Port Vila Under-16 girls’ team is expected to travel to Brisbane next year to return the visit and continue strengthening the friendship between the two football communities.

The Avalon team is scheduled to return to Australia today.
