Vanuatu’s first representatives for the upcoming Commonwealth Games departed the country yesterday, marking the beginning of Team Vanuatu’s journey to Scotland.

Para powerlifter Marek Sahi and Team Manager Seleana Enrel will spend a night in Australia before continuing their journey to Scotland today.

Upon arrival, the pair will spend a week training at the Ayr Campus of the University of the West of Scotland ahead of the opening of the Commonwealth Games on the 23rd. They will then move into the Games Village in Glasgow before competition begins.

Vanuatu Paralympic Committee (VPC) President, Margaret MacFarlane, said she was excited to see the team begin its journey and wished them a successful preparation.

“We are looking forward to Marek and Seleana arriving safely and making the most of their final training camp before the competition,” MacFarlane said.

Sahi, who competes in the 65-kilogram para powerlifting category, said she was grateful for the opportunity to represent Vanuatu on one of the biggest stages in international sport.

“This is my first Commonwealth Games, and I hope to represent my country well and make my family proud,” Sahi said.

Team Manager Enrel said the team had already attended several training camps in preparation for the Games and was confident the final week of training in Ayr would ensure they were competition-ready.

“We have prepared well through previous training camps, and this final camp will help us fine-tune our preparations before the Games begin,” she said.

The departure of Sahi and Enrel marks the first stage of Team Vanuatu’s travel to Scotland. The next group, consisting of officials, will depart in the coming days, followed by the final and largest contingent before the opening ceremony on the 23rd.

The Vanuatu Paralympic Committee thanked the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC), the Government of Vanuatu, and other sponsors for their continued support in ensuring Vanuatu’s para athletes are able to participate in the 23rd Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games provide an important opportunity for Vanuatu’s athletes to compete against some of the world’s best while proudly representing the nation on the international stage.
