Jesta Toka, a senior player in Vanuatu’s Australian Rules Football League (AFL), is set to make history as the first female athlete from Vanuatu to play for the Wyong Lakes Magpies Club in New Castle, New South Wales, Australia.

Toka will join the club for the next three months.

The Wyong Lakes Australian Football Club, known as the Magpies, competes in the AFL Hunter Central Coast league in the Black Diamond Plate (Division Two) competition.

Toka was scouted in March while leading a team of U17 players from South Pacific -island countries in a talent camp competition against Australian teams where they win the academic competition.

Impressed by her talent and skill, the club invited her to stay and play, as well as coach primary school students.

AFL Vanuatu Programs Manager, Nancy Patterson, praised Toka’s abilities and dedication. The 24-year-old athlete has a diverse sports background, having played for Vanuatu’s national women’s football team and as a netball player. She also founded the Fresh Wota Raiders team, a group that women the senior women’s competition a few years back.

“Jesta’s commitment and athletic prowess have earned her this opportunity. It’s a remarkable achievement for Jesta to be recognized by an Australian club,” Patterson said.

Patterson also highlighted the dual role the single mother will play.

“She will not only compete but also coach children, which will significantly enhance her coaching skills,” she confirmed.

This opportunity is a proud moment for AFL Vanuatu, showcasing one of its best players on an international platform.
