ABC-trains-Vanuatu-media-personnel-to-be-journalism-trainers

Last week, ABC facilitators under ABC International Development (ABCID) launched a ‘training for trainers’ on the Foundations of Journalism (FoJ) at Chantilly’s on the Bay in Port Vila.

12 to-be trainers from mainstream media in Solomon Islands, Samoa, Kiribati and Vanuatu undertook the 3-day training program delivered by ABCID Media Project Manager, Peta Bulsara, with support from PACMAS Fiji Project Manager Rita Narayan and ABCs Fiona Churchman.

The 30-course program is packaged into five separate themes that provides new and current reporters/media personnel the basic fundamentals of reporting and a more diversified approach to journalism.

According to PACMAS Fiji Project Manager, Rita Narayan, and FoJ facilitator, the training in Vanuatu is the second of its kind, first being in Nadi with participants from Fiji, Tonga and Palau.

Once the training is complete, all trainers will receive certificates and will be tasked with continuing the training program to other students/potential media personnel.

The aim is to upskill trainers and students in the practice of journalism and to date 18 trainers are the product of this initiative by ABCID in partnership with PACMAS.

“We’re excited to have a second cohort of facilitators successfully complete the training skills development workshop in Port Vila,” ABCID Facilitator Narayan said.

“There was a lot of discussion around adult learning and how to make it relevant and practical in a training. Some of the facilitators said it was an eye opener and they’ve learnt new skills. We at PACMAS are looking forward to supporting them roll out the Foundations of Journalism program in their organisations with the skills they acquired during the training.”

Vanuatu had 6 trainers participate in the program this week, Kiribati 3, Samoa 2 and 1 from Solomon Islands.

The ABCID team will be visiting Papua New Guinea next to introduce the training.
