Voters from SHEFA, MALAMPA, TAFEA and PENAMA Provinces are going to the polls on July 8 to elect their new councillors, as council terms are ending soon.

On the same day, voters in the Port Vila Freshwota/Tassiriki Ward will vote for a new candidate to fill the vacant seat left by female councillor and former Deputy Mayor Marie Louise Milne, who resigned to contest the snap election.

The SANMA Provincial Council will also hold a by-election to fill the seat left by Franklin William Ezra, who resigned to contest in the snap election. The runner-up did not meet the threshold, so a by-election will be held.

The campaign period and election date approved by the Electoral Commission have been published in the official gazette.

Campaign period for the four provincial elections and two by-elections starts from June 23 and ends at midnight on July 5.

Candidate nominations for all elections will take place from May 7 to May 17.

Candidature applications including party and candidate agents will also open on May 7 and will close at 5pm on May 17. The candidate nomination fee is VT55,000.

Proxy applications will also open on May 7 and will close at 5pm on May 30.

Campaign will open on June 23 after the ballot paper draw on June 24.

The Vanuatu Electoral Office encouraged citizens who have recently turned 18 to register now so that they can participate in the upcoming elections. Registration closes on May 27, which is six weeks before the election date.

Voters are also urged to check where they will be voting and ensure they have a national ID card, rather than waiting until the last minute.

Provincial election terms last for four years. The councils going to the polls in were elected in 2021, while SANMA went to election last year.

Voters will return to the polls just five months after the snap election to cast their votes in the provincial elections.
