Vanuatu’s veteran table tennis player and Gold medalist, Anolyn Lulu, will depart Port Vila today to join the Pacific Team for the Australian National Championship.

The championships will be held from July 6–11 in New South Wales, with the Oceania representative team comprising players from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

The team will be led by Oceania Table Tennis Development Officer, Hongbo Liang.

For Lulu, who has represented Vanuatu at the senior level for more than 30 years, the tournament marks her debut appearance as a member of the Pacific Team.

The squad which was selected by Oceania Table Tennis, will compete in all major events, including the team competition, singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Lulu, who also serves as President of the Vanuatu Table Tennis Federation (VTTF), said she was honoured to have been selected by Table Tennis Oceania.

She acknowledged the high standard of competition but said she is determined to perform at her best.

She highlighted next year’s Pacific Games in Tahiti as a major target for Vanuatu, adding that the VTTF is working hard to ensure the country’s athletes are well prepared.

“As an athlete, every competition is tough, but I will use all the practice and experience I have gained to give my best effort,” she said.

“I also want to be a role model and an ambassador for Vanuatu, showing that sport brings people together regardless of where they come from or their background.”

Lulu said the tournament would also provide valuable learning opportunities. She plans to gain as much knowledge as possible from the coaching staff and fellow players before bringing those experiences back to Vanuatu.

“When I return, I want to share what I have learned by teaching, mentoring and helping develop current and future table tennis players in Vanuatu,” she said.

Although the Pacific Team will have just one day of training together before competition begins, Lulu is confident the players will quickly build strong teamwork and learn from one another.

She also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent both Vanuatu and Oceania.

Lulu encouraged young people, particularly girls from all backgrounds, to continue pursuing the sports they love.

“Keep working hard because sport can take you to places you may never expect or even dream of,” she said.

“There are opportunities not only as athletes, but also in administration, officiating and many other areas of sport.”

She concluded by thanking Table Tennis Oceania and the Vanuatu Table Tennis Federation for their continued commitment to developing table tennis in Vanuatu and creating opportunities for local athletes to compete internationally.
