British High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Karen Bell, has put pen to paper with the President of Vanuatu National Council of Women (VNCW), Anita Deroin, for the United Kingdom to fund two projects valued at VT700, 000.
VNCW President Deroin welcomed the partnership and acknowledged the British High Commission for the support. This is the first time for UK to assist VNCW, and the Commission assured the VNCW executive that it won’t be the last time.
Approximately VT156, 000 will be spent on garden tools for the OLVI Women’s Development Association Climate Change reforestation project. The second is the Institutional Support/ Strengthening project worth VT531, 732. This financial assistance will help the TAFEA Provincial Council of Women visit and strengthening the 12 provincial area councils of women in its jurisdiction.
The British High Commissioner said she is very pleased that the UK is funding these projects. “This is the first project we have done with VNCW, let us think of it as a pilot and we will see how it goes,” she said.
“Today, we have committed approximately VT700,000. It is a small project and it gives us the basis to move forward. “At the moment, we are not directly involved in work on wider areas of gender equality but, we have a new foreign secretary in the UK, who has made woman a vey high priority.
“We look forward to working on more similar projects and hope there will be more opportunities to help in the future.”
