capacity-building-for-civil-society-and-gender-in-climate-finance

A two-day national stakeholder capacity-building workshop on climate finance, with a focus on civil society and gender, is underway in Port Vila.

The workshop is hosted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation (MoCCA).

The first part of the workshop started yesterday with members of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and today’s session focuses on gender and climate finance, a statement by the MoCCA conveyed.

GGGI Senior Program Officer, Mr. Jesse Benjamin, says a good understanding of gender and climate finance and the role of civil society is important for climate finance projects.

“Today’s workshop focuses on civil society and tomorrow’s focus is on gender but is all around climate finance,” Mr. Benjamin said.

“A good understanding of climate finance and gender in terms of its impact on women and children as well as vulnerable groups such as the elderly that includes men, as well the role of the civil society are important in attracting climate finance for projects.

“Everyone has a part to play.”

These capacity building workshops are part of the GCF Readiness project that aims to support the accreditation of the MFEM as the country’s first Direct Access Entity with the MoCCA as the cooperating Executing Entity.

Mr. Benjamin says one of the key outputs include development of Vanuatu’s National Designated Authority (NDA) Project Development Handbook.

The GGGI Consultant, Mr. Corey Huber, who is facilitating the two-day workshop says the first day of the workshop focuses on climate finance and civil society roles, not only in terms of addressing climate impacts, but also designing climate policy and climate actions as well as having an inclusive approach to climate finance.

He says this will not only see civil society as participants in climate finance but also as beneficiaries of climate finance support.

“I think CSOs play an invaluable role in society and having CSOs as part of our national response to the climate crisis, is fundamental.

“Hopefully, by the end of today (yesterday), participants will have a better understanding of the relationship and role that CSOs play, the policy that supports that action, what Finance has to say and ultimately I hope everyone walks away with a better understanding of how we’re all working together on addressing the crisis,” Mr. Huber said.

The GGGI Consultant says today’s workshop takes a similar approach but focuses on gender, which is a thematic area that has guidance in terms of science and impacts, policy, gender responsive climate finance and indicators.
