The Diocese of Vanuatu and New Caledonia (DOVNC) and the Diocese of Banks and Torres (DOBT) are joining the global community in marking International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Give To Gain.”

According to Balance of Power (BOP), which is supporting the event by sponsoring the awards, the celebration will take place tomorrow at Sarakata Anglican Church in Luganville, Santo, and will honour the vital contributions of women in church and community leadership across the two dioceses. The event seeks to inspire shared leadership, showcase women’s achievements, and encourage active participation across generations.

Highlights of the celebration will include recognition awards for 20 outstanding women leaders—10 from each diocese—who have made a difference in their communities. The Bishops of DOVNC and DOBT will deliver speeches on the importance of shared leadership, while representatives from the Mothers’ Union will share insights on women’s roles in church and society.

Youth leaders and community members will also take part in the program, reflecting the event’s intergenerational approach.

Both dioceses invite community members and stakeholders to join the celebration and follow updates on their social media platforms.

Inaugurated on 12 May 1996, the Diocese of Banks and Torres is one of the most historically significant dioceses in the Anglican Church of Melanesia.

It was the first to ordain an indigenous Melanesian into priesthood, and the first Christian village was established at Veverau on Mota Island, where Bishop John Coleridge Patteson celebrated the first Holy Communion. The Mota language from this diocese played a key role in spreading Christianity throughout Melanesia.

The diocese comprises 13 islands organized into five regions, with 55 active priests as of 2023. Its first Bishop, Right Reverend Charles W. Ling, served from 1996 to 2000. He was succeeded by Reverend Nathan Tome (2001–2013) and then Right Reverend Patteson Alfred Worek (2014–2023). The current Bishop, Rev. Anthony Ling, was elected on 1 September 2023 at Saovaro Parish in Port Vila.

Founded in 1975 at Lolowai on Ambae Island, the Diocese of Vanuatu and New Caledonia includes eight regions, 39 parishes, and 20 sub-parishes, with a total of 564 priests currently serving. The diocesan headquarters is located in Luganville town, Santo.

The first Bishop was Rt Rev. Dereck Rawcliff, and after several successors, Bishop James Tama was consecrated on 12 August 2018 and continues to serve today.
