The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will introduce a four-term calendar school year in all government schools starting next year, following approval by the Council of Ministers (COM).

This reform aims to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes, provide more balanced learning periods both formal an informal curriculum, and improve student performance across Vanuatu, said the ministry in a statement.

Details of this change will be provided later in a circular by the Director General (DG) of the ministry, Cherol Ala.

The introduction of four school terms was announced in a statement that also provided end-of-year examination dates and other important updates.

National examinations are now scheduled from December 2 to 12, meaning all year school levels of school will end on December 12.

“The re-scheduling allows time for teachers to complete curriculum topics or strands, for al years. Conduct mock examinations or school assessment and return results to students before the real exams. It will also give students time to complete their Internal Assessment (IA) tasks and for teachers to mark and submit the scores to the Examination and Assessment Unit,” said MoET.

“As the examination date has been rescheduled to December, the public should also expect that the national selection for Year 10, 12 and the scholarship shortlist will be delayed until January 2026.”

The ministry also added that it remains committed to solving the ongoing strike and is working to end it as soon as possible.

“The utmost focus and priority are the students and their well-being. Parents, guardians, community and church leaders are encouraged to continue supporting students in every possible way, so they feel motivated and prepared for their examinations.”
