The Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) and the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), to delivering programs focused on gender-based violence prevention, social inclusion, and anti-bullying awareness across Vanuatu.

The signing ceremony was attended by Australian High Commission representatives Hannah McKnight and Jamal Vira, Vanuatu Women’s Centre Coordinator Tatavola Matas and VWC staff, Vila East School’s Deputy Principal, teachers and students from Years 7 and 8, Cricket staff and athletes.

The partnership strengthens collaboration through VCA’s Appeal Against Violence Program, which uses cricket as a safe and inclusive platform to educate, empower, and support children, young people, and communities throughout Vanuatu.

Through planned outreach activities over the coming months and beyond, VCA and VWC will work together to raise awareness of gender equality, respectful relationships, social inclusion, child protection, and anti-bullying practices while promoting positive community values through sport.

The event also served as an early celebration of Children’s Day, with students participating in educational sessions on self-respect, anti-bullying awareness, and safe and unsafe touch. More than 200 students from Vila East School then took part in cricket activities and fun games facilitated by Vanuatu Cricket staff and fellows, followed by a celebratory lunch ahead of the school term break.

VCA acknowledged the support of Team Up, the Australian Government-funded sport-for-development program in the Pacific, for its continued investment in creating safer and more inclusive communities through sport.

Speaking on the importance of the partnership, VCA highlighted the role cricket can play in addressing social issues and creating opportunities for positive engagement.

“This partnership represents an important step forward in our commitment to reducing gender-based violence, promoting inclusion, and creating safe environments for children and communities. By working together, we can use cricket as a powerful tool to educate, empower, and inspire positive change across Vanuatu”, said the VCA- Planning and Programs Coordinator, Vanessa Sandy.

VCA extended its appreciation to the Australian High Commission, Team Up, the VCA management and staff, Vila East School leadership, teachers and students, and all Vanuatu Cricket staff, athletes, fellows, and volunteers whose efforts contributed to the success of this milestone event.
