To celebrate International Women’s Day, Sista is holding an exhibition at Alliance Francaise from March 8th to March 15th using arts and communications to celebrate Ni-Vanuatu women.

The theme of the exhibition is `Playful + Powerful’ as we believe that the most powerful thing a woman can do is be truly herself. This is not easy in a world that constantly tells women what to do and how to behave. When a woman does decide to claim her space and be authentically who she is, we believe this transformation goes beyond self-love. A woman who knows her self-worth will claim her rights and will demand that her rights be respected. Not only that, she will also demand that others respect the rights of those around her.

At Sista, we recognize that the journey to self-discovery and empowerment is not linear and full of ups and downs, so we encourage women to take time out and play. After all, if you’re going to be yourself, why not have fun doing it?

Join us from March 8th to March 15th at Alliance Francaise and enjoy:

Why do we promote self-love and self-care?

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lord

Sista believes that ‘Self-Care’ is a radical act against a world that tries to tell women they have to be a ‘certain way’ (eg, thin, pretty, nice, quiet, humble, cook, clean, etc) in order to be accepted and respected. Women are the ones who carry the burden of unpaid work and childcare and are considered to be ‘natural nurturers’ which often means that a woman’s needs takes a backseat to everyone else in their household and community.

We want to encourage women to take care of themselves – whether it’s focusing on your career, putting an effort with your outfit, learning to say no, painting your nails, reading a book or hanging out with your friends, Sista believes it’s crucial that a woman takes time out to address her own needs in order to be her best self. Furthermore given the high expectations of women to do so many things – be a mother, wife, go to work, do the household chores, help the community, look good, etc – it’s a matter of survival to take some time out and rest.
