The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is celebrating the success of its digital library, Vanuatu Literacy Nasara, on International Literacy Day, observed on 8 September each year.

This initiative has helped improve reading skills across the country by offering nearly 1,200 books in different languages spoken throughout Vanuatu, enriching the educational experiences of young students.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace,” focuses on the role of literacy in advancing equality, respect, and harmony in society. The Ministry recognises literacy as a basic human right, not only important for personal growth but also for building good relationships between communities and around the world.

Since 2020, the MoET’s Curriculum Development Unit has been working to improve literacy in Vanuatu. By updating existing books and creating new ones, the unit has made educational resources more accessible to students and parents.

This work led to the launch of Vanuatu Literacy Nasara, an online library for students from Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to Year 3. Available at bloomlibrary.org/Vanuatu-Literacy-Nasara, the library offers a wide variety of books in English, French, Bislama, and seven other local languages. These resources support young learners and teachers in improving literacy. The project is supported by the Global Partnership for Education, Save the Children, SIL International, and the people of Australia, with ongoing training backed by the Australian and Vanuatu governments.

Crem Mandavah, the MoET’s Acting Principal Education Officer at the Curriculum Development Unit, acknowledged the hard work behind making this library a reality.

“The creation of the Vanuatu Literacy Nasara is changing how we approach literacy in Vanuatu,” he said. “By offering these resources online for free, we are removing barriers to education and giving our children the tools they need to succeed. This project is the result of the dedication and teamwork of the Ministry and our partners.”

Recent training sessions in SHEFA in August 2024, and earlier in SANMA in 2023, provided teachers, principals, and community members with skills to use SIL International’s Bloom Library platform to create and translate books. These efforts aim to expand Vanuatu Literacy Nasara and include resources for children in Year 4 and beyond.

The MoET acknowledges Save the Children, the Global Partnership for Education, SIL International, and the Australian government for their support in promoting literacy and ensuring every child in Vanuatu has access to quality educational materials.
