The Ministry of Health (MOH) has declared a flu outbreak on Efate after a surge in cases at the Vila Central Hospital (VCH) from December 30, 2024 to January 5, 2025.

Of the 360 confirmed flu cases recorded in the latest surveillance, majority of the cases have been detected at Ohlen, Mele, and Bladinere with no death.

The high number of cases makes it an outbreak of flu on Efate, the ministry conveyed in a statement yesterday.

The public is urged to practice good hygiene by washing hands regularly and covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and wearing a mask if going to a public place.

People are urged to limit their movement in crowded places, and take extra care of people with disabilities, children and elderly.

People are also reminded to be aware of symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Those with such symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention at their nearest health facility.

Influenza, or the flu, is spread primarily through respiratory droplets from an infected person’s cough, sneeze, or talk. It can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your nose, mouth, or eyes.
