The women’s farmer group in Pangpang Village, East Efate, has taken a major step forward in food security and sustainable agriculture through a transformative three-day nutrition and cookery training programme.

Organised by Live & Learn Vanuatu in partnership with the Australian Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), the training is part of the European Union-funded “Strengthening Nature-based Agriculture in Vanuatu” project.

The training, led by APTC’s Mr. Knox Taleo, focused on sustainable cooking practices using Lokol Aelan Kaikai—local island food—to prepare over 15 different nutritious recipes. More than 30 women participated in the session, gaining valuable knowledge on how to maximise the nutritional benefits of their homegrown produce while reducing reliance on imported food.

Live & Learn Vanuatu’s Project Coordinator, Mr. Emil Samuel, emphasised the importance of equipping communities with essential skills to improve food security. “This initiative goes beyond agriculture—it empowers women with the knowledge to create healthier meals for their families, contributing to better nutrition and overall well-being,” he stated.

Ms Joyline John of Live & Learn’s Port Vila office acknowledged the enthusiasm of the Pangpang women in adopting sustainable agricultural practices. “The dedication shown by the participants is inspiring. They are not only learning how to prepare nutritious meals but also finding innovative ways to add value to their agricultural products,” she said.

In addition to the cookery training, the women of Pangpang are actively involved in agroforestry, planting diverse crops, vegetables, and trees to maintain a sustainable food supply for their village and surrounding communities. Their efforts extend to producing peanut-based products, including hard candy peanuts, sugar-coated peanuts, and garlic peanuts, which have provided an additional source of income.

Live & Learn Vanuatu Team Leader, Mrs. Glarinda Andre-Tenearu, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to strengthening community skills and resilience. “We are dedicated to working alongside communities throughout Vanuatu to build a more resilient and food-secure future. Supporting women in agriculture and nutrition is a crucial step toward sustainability and self-reliance,” she said.

The Pangpang women’s initiative is a testament to the power of community-driven development, demonstrating that with the right knowledge and support, rural communities can take charge of their food security and economic opportunities. Live & Learn Vanuatu, through partnerships and targeted training, continues to play a crucial role in enhancing the livelihoods of women and families across the country.
