Vanuatu’s table tennis star, Anolyn Lulu, departed yesterday for Melbourne in Australia to compete in the annual ITTF Oceania Cup.

The singles event will feature the top eight players from the Pacific, with competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu.

The event marks the first international tournament of the year and the first post-earthquake event for Vanuatu’s representation on global stage.

Lulu, accompanied by head coach Satoshi Takashima, will battle for a top position, with the winner securing a place at the prestigious ITTF Men’s and Women’s World Cup 2025.

This elite global tournament is scheduled to take place at the Galaxy Arena in Macao from April 14 to 20.

With three strong players from Australia, two from New Zealand, one from Fiji, one from New Caledonia, and Lulu representing Vanuatu, the competition is expected to be intense. Notably, Vanuatu’s top-ranked player, Priscilla Tommy, will not be competing this year. Despite the challenges, Lulu remains determined to represent her nation.

“I initially considered withdrawing, especially after the December 17 earthquake that struck Port Vila.

“However, thanks to the generosity of the Oceania Table Tennis Federation, which sponsored my trip, I am grateful for the opportunity and will do my best to represent my country,” Lulu said.

In the men’s competition, Australia and New Zealand each have two representatives, while Fiji, New Caledonia, and Tahiti each have one. Vanuatu does not have a men’s representative in this year’s event.

While in Melbourne, Lulu will also participate in the Pacific Cup, a separate tournament that excludes Australia and New Zealand but includes Melanesian and smaller Pacific nations.

Lulu expressed gratitude to JICA International for supporting the Oceania Table Tennis Federation in making her trip possible.

“Australia and New Zealand have the advantage of competing in many international tournaments, whereas we have fewer opportunities.

“However, I believe that mental preparation is crucial for this event. We’ll do our best,” she affirmed.

Last year, Priscilla Tommy represented Vanuatu in the tournament held in New Caledonia.
