The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is urging all parents and guardians to enrol their 4–5-year-old childrenin kindergarten for the 2026 school year, which commences next week.

Early childhood education is a critical stage in a child’s development, providing the foundation for future learning, particularly in literacy and numeracy, as well as social, emotional and cognitive skills.

Vanuatu has an estimated 15,000 children aged 4 and 5 years, based on national population data. Ensuring these children are enrolled in kindergarten is a key priority to support school readiness and long-term educational success.

“The early years of education are extremely important in shaping a child’s learning journey,” said the Coordinator for Early Childhood Education at the MoET, Serah Vurobaravu Liki.

“Kindergarten helps children build strong foundational skills in reading, writing and mathematics, while also developing confidence, communication skills and positive learning habits. These early experiences prepare children for primary school and beyond.”

“Children who attend kindergarten are more likely to transition smoothly into primary school. Quality early learning helps children to develop early literacy skills, including language, listening, vocabulary and pre-reading; build numeracy foundations such as counting, shapes, patterns and basic problem-solving; and strengthen social and emotional skills, including cooperation, independence, routine and self-confidence,” according to the MoET.

These foundational years play a crucial role in shaping lifelong learning outcomes.

The MoET, with support from the Australian Government and UNICEF, continues to support Early Childhood Education across the country through support and guidance for registered kindergarten centres; collaboration with communities, churches and partners to expand access to early learning services; teacher training and curriculum support to improve the quality of kindergarten education; and public awareness initiatives encouraging parents to enrol children early.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to enrol their children in kindergarten before the start of Term 1 on Monday next week, to give them the best possible start to their education journey.
