pikinini-playtime-introduced-to-just-play-program

The Pikinini Playtime School in Port Vila has organized a two-day workshop to introduce its teachers to the Just Play program.

This initiative, which aims to integrate sports with life skills education, saw participation from 16 teachers across preschool, primary, and secondary levels of the Pikinini Playtime School.

The Just Play program, initiated by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), advocates for gender equality and health awareness through sports and the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) is ensuring that Vanuatu has the privilege of this programme.

Hence, schools around Port Vila have been introduced to the program by OFC and VFF instructors.

At Pikinini Playtime, the workshop, held from Monday and Tuesday, was conducted by the school’s Just Play trainer and deputy principal, Esther Sope.

Teachers from Pikinini Playtime’s sister schools, including Rongdale, Erangorango, and Tanna, were also in attendance, particularly the sports teachers.

Key topics discussed during the workshop included understanding gender roles, developing relationships, fostering positivity, and breaking barriers in a male-dominated society.

Esther Sope emphasized the broader goals of the program.

“It’s not only about kicking a ball; it’s about teaching the kids life skills.

“We want them to socialize, understand the value and importance of gender equality, and speak up whenever there is a need,” said Sope.

Sope highlighted the dual benefits of the program, noting that it not only aids children’s development but also enhances the trainers’ understanding and practice of crucial societal etiquettes.

Maria Simeon, a preschool teacher, expressed her enthusiasm for the Just Play program, saying, “It helps children understand their identity and values from a young age, ensuring that everyone is treated fairly, has fun, and is part of a team.”

The workshop saw a predominantly female turnout, which Sope viewed positively.

“It shows that more women are getting involved in a sport that is traditionally male dominated, specifically football,” she said.

Port Vila Just Play Coordinator, Annie Gere, thanked schools around Port Vila for allowing the introduction of the programme to their academic calendar as well as congratulating the schools who have initiated the course to their teachers.

She extended her gratitude to Shefa Principal Education Officer and school principals for ensuring the participation of their schools to this programme.

While Pikinini Playtime School is still in the initial phase, it looks forward to conducting more courses in the future as regulated by VFF and OFC.
