Over 120 roundtable sessions on domestic violence
More than 120 domestic violence-related roundtable sessions have been conducted by the General Duty Police Officers from January to May this year.
Domestic violence has become a major concern in the country, affecting many homes and families. Trust between parents in the household is often broken, leading to instability and suffering.
There have been numerous incidents relating to domestic violence, which have forced many families to seek help from the police to restore peace in their homes. Some of the cases are being investigated by the police and have proceeded to court, with suspects being detained in the Correctional Centres. Other cases are resolved through roundtable discussions (mediation) between family members at police posts and stations across Vanuatu.
The Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) continues to encourage everyone to work together in addressing and reducing domestic violence in communities.
Crime Prevention Unit conducts over 40 awareness sessions since January
The Crime Prevention Unit of the VPF has conducted over 40 awareness sessions with communities in Port Vila and on Efate since January this year.
These awareness programmes focused mainly on criminal activities occurring within communities in Port Vila. Among these sessions, ten schools in Port Vila also participated in the awareness efforts carried out by the Crime Unit.
The VPF believes that the general public in Port Vila is now well-informed about the information shared by the police, and continues to encourage everyone to work together with law enforcement to help reduce criminal activities in the country.
Police officers undergo training for high-speed patrol boat operations
The VPF and Chinese police officers have exchanged valuable knowledge through various bilateral agreements between the two parties.
The Chinese police have assessed the operational needs and capacity gaps of the VPF and have committed to supporting them through targeted training programmes.
One such initiative is the arrival of a special team of Chinese officers in Vanuatu to train selected VPF officers in the operation of a high-speed patrol boat, recently provided to the Vanuatu Government by the Chinese Government.
The training programme, which will run for one week, will focus on boat handling, navigation, and basic technical maintenance—ensuring officers are fully equipped to operate and maintain the patrol vessel.
The VPF thanked the Government of China for this valuable initiative, which contributes to strengthening the operational capacity of VPF officers.
