The Government is set to present the Bill for the Parliament (Members’ Expenses and Allowances) (Amendment) Act [CAP 109], which proposes raising the annual MP Allocation from VT5 million to VT6 million.

The amendment would increase the maximum annual responsibility allowance for MPs from VT5,989,600 to VT6,600,000—an increase of VT610,400. It also removes the requirement for the funds to be disbursed in instalments, enabling MPs to receive the full amount in one payment.

These changes follow a 2024 review by the Government Remuneration Tribunal (GRT), which assessed compensation for individuals employed or appointed to government positions, including MPs.

Parliament will meet today for its 2025 First Ordinary Session, where 19 bills are listed for debate, including the proposed amendment to the Parliament (Members’ Expenses and Allowances) Act.

The 19 bills scheduled for debate during the session are the Electrical Works Safety Bill, Resident Entity (Economic Substance) Bill, Resident Entity (Economic Substance) (Consequential Amendments) Bill, Public ServiceBill, Statute Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, Ratification of Certain Conventions Bill, Utilities Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, Public Holidays (Amendment)Bill, Government Contracts and Tenders (Amendment) Bill, Public Finance and Economic Management (Amendment) Bill, Passports (Amendment) Bill, Government Remuneration Tribunal (Amendment) Bill, Parliament (Members’ Expenses and Allowances) Bill, Harmful Digital Communications (Amendment) Bill, Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (Amendment) Bill, Supplementary Appropriation (2025) Bill, Land Reform (Amendment) Bill, and Foreign Services (Amendment) Bill.
