During Monday’s Victory Parade commemorating Vanuatu’s 45th Independence Anniversary, Lady Mayor of Port Vila City Council (PVCC), Jenny Regenvanu, delivered an emotional speech as the march passed through the heart of the capital. Reflecting on the devastation caused by past disasters, she shared a heartfelt message of remembrance, sorrow, and hope for a stronger future.

As the parade moved through the town, Madam Regenvanu expressed her sadness at the visible damage still present in the city. “When marching through the town, I see the buildings, the destruction, and I feel very sorry for what has happened to our beautiful Port Vila,” she said.

One of the most solemn moments of the parade came when national leaders and participants stopped at the Billabong Building, a site that became a symbol of tragedy during the 17 December 2024 earthquake. Nearly ten people were trapped inside the building during the quake. The gathering paused to pay respects to the victims and their families before continuing on to Independence Park.

Recalling childhood memories, Madam Regenvanu spoke of a time when Port Vila was vibrant and beautiful, a stark contrast to the current reality marked by disaster scars. “The earthquake of 17 December is a day none of us will ever forget,” she said. “It will remain in the hearts of all who lived through it, especially the victims’ families.”

As the country celebrates 45 years of independence, the Lady Mayor used the occasion to urge unity and reflection among citizens and leaders. “Let us look back and reflect on our journey — where we came from and where we are heading,” she said. “Our leaders, our government, churches, chiefs, and every man and woman must walk together.”

She concluded by underlining the importance of unity and cooperation to rebuild and improve Port Vila. “If we walk together, our Port will be better than before. And if we work together, we will always be happy,” Madam Regenvanu said.
