Over 170,000 registered voters with national ID cards are expected to go to the polls next Tuesday to elect 76 new provincial and municipal councillors, according Principal Electoral Officer (PEO), Guilain Malessas.

Of the 76 new councillors, 74 will represent the PENAMA, MALAMPA, SHEFA, and TAFEA Provincial Councils whose terms ended in May.

One councillor will be elected in the Freshwota/Tassiriki Ward to replace the former Deputy Mayor Marie Louise Milne who resigned to contest the snap election, while another will fill a vacant seat in the SANMA Provincial Council left by Franklin William Ezra who also resigned to run in the snap election.

Currently, 253 candidates are campaigning to secure one of the seats. Among them are ten female candidates, with six contesting in Port Vila, and one each in Pentecost, Malekula, Emau and Ambae.

Two hundred and ninety-two (292) polling stations will be opening at 7:30am for voters to cast their ballots, except two polling stations on Futuna, where voting will not take place as there is only one unopposed candidate. Voting will close at 4:30pm.

With only four days left, PEO Malessas said the Electoral Office is committed to carrying out all necessary activities in preparation for the elections.

RVS Sokomanu left Port Vila yesterday with 213 ballot boxes bound for Shepherd Islands, Epi, Paama, Ambrym, Pentecost, Ambae, Maewo, Malekula and Santo. Over 30 police officers have been deployed with the ballot boxes to provide security on the islands. Meanwhile, Unity Airlines will transport 46 ballot boxes for Tanna and Outer Islands on Sunday. The ballot boxes for over 10 polling stations in Santo Bush will be delivered by helicopter, at around VT6million.

The training of presiding and polling clerks is underway for Port Vila and SHEA, MALAMPA, PENAMA and TAFEA, while training for Santo will be conducted over the weekend, according to PEO Malessas.

The PEO thanked the New Zealand Government for its support, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Vanuatu Electoral Environment Project for providing 100 new ballot boxes and 700 indelible links for elections.

Next week’s provincial elections and by-elections are being carried out at a cost of VT91 million, with VT68 million allocated for the four provincial elections and VT23 million for the by-elections.

PEO Malessas explained a large portion of the funds is being spent on officials’ allowance, transportation and printing of ballot papers.
