The two-day celebration of the 50th anniversary of Port Vila Day (PVD) began yesterday and will conclude today, aiming to educate both children and adults about the city’s history.

PVD Chairman Amos Ronnie said this year’s Golden Jubilee is not just a celebration but an opportunity to reflect, especially as Port Vila continues to recover from last year’s earthquake.

“This two-day event is not about partying or drinking,” Ronnie explained. “It is about sharing what Port Vila has experienced over the past five decades, acknowledging the Port Vila City Council’s (PVCC) progress, and outlining its plans for the future.”

One key feature of the event is the planned signing of the Beautification Project, which may be rescheduled to today’s programme at Saralana.

Three formal signings are expected to take place, representing major developments for the PVCC. These include the Zoning Plan recently approved by Parliament, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Health (MoH) to roll out a Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) programme in selected wards, and the Beautification Project, in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DoT), the Department of Forestry, and the PVCC.

A side activity called the “Get to Know Port Vila Tour” took place yesterday, sponsored by the DoT, which provided ten free buses.

The tour, lasting an hour and a half, included stops at the Seafront to view the reclaimed water mark, Kawenu Field at the Queen Elizabeth stage (1974), the first Port Vila dump site at Agatis, the residence of the first Lord Mayor, the current cemetery to reflect on changes made for the new site, Bouffa Landfill, and the Port Vila Memorial Garden at Erakor.

Today’s programme includes the official PVD event, beginning with a parade from Tropical Market to Saralana.

A Guard of Honour will be present and acknowledged by the Lady Mayor at 9:30am, followed by speeches, a flag-raising ceremony, and a customary presentation.

In the afternoon, government departments and businesses will set up booths to share information and promote local products.
