Sista would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous support we received from Ambassade de France this year.

Through their support, we were able to develop the Sikmun Storian booklet with the alumni of the Young Women’s Leadership Program and distribute it to key stakeholders, partners, and schools around Port Vila.

The team also carried out a Menstrual Cup survey with 60 women, in the hopes to get a better understanding on the usability and demand for this specific menstrual product in Vanuatu.

These projects aimed to continue the conversation on breaking the stigma around menstrual health and menstrual products. As with all of our projects, we believe that women and young girls deserve to access information topics concerning their well-being, such as menstrual health, and not feel ashamed about it!

 Sikmun Storian Booklet

The ‘Sikmun Storian’ booklet is funded by Ambassade de France and was led by the Young Women’s Leadership Program Alumni (YWLP) in Port Vila with the support of Sista’s Project Coordinator and Program Support Manager.

The ‘Sikmun Storian’ booklet collected stories of the experiences of Ni-Vanuatu women of all ages in both rural and urban settings to share their menstruation journeys. The goal of this booklet is to normalize discussions around menstruation and empower women and girls to speak openly about menstruation. A component of the work identified menstruation stories in the context of kastom and documented these practices to better understand cultural beliefs and dispel any misconceptions.

The planning  of this project commenced in April 2023, the stories were collected and compiled in May 2023 and it was finally developed and printed in December 2023.

Sista’s Project Coordinator and the Project Team Leader, Georgilla Worwor who is also a YWLP Alumni, took a month to plan and prepare for this activity which involved recruiting YWLP Alumni to carry out the interviews with interested women, discussing and finalizing the workplan and debriefing the YWLP Alumni on the overall project and expected outcomes from the interviews.

Once all the stories were collected in May 2023, the Project Team Lead, Sista’s Program Support Manager, Sarah Freeman of Gate Minds (link), Victoria Magda – a volunteer – and Sista’s Executive Director collectively edited the 25 stories collected for this booklet.

The editing process along with the overall design of the booklet took some time as the team at Sista were juggling different projects and different timelines. Eventually the final design of the booklet, which was created by a YWLP Alumni and former Sista staff member, was printed in December 2023.

We printed a total of 50 copies and distributed them to all the women who took part in this project, including the 25 women who shared their ‘sikmun’ story, and later distributed the remaining copies to schools around Port Vila.

We are so glad to have been able to create this vital resource in contribution to the other resources and projects out there that are trying to break the stigma around menstrual health in our communities.

A big thank you to Ambassde De France for their generous support and to all of the women who helped make this booklet possible!

Sharing of Sikmun Storian booklet and other resources

The ‘Sikmun Storian’ booklet was developed to help break the stigma around menstrual health and brought together 25 stories from a range of women who shared their experience particularly when they first got their period.

At Sista, we believe it is important for young people, especially young girls, to have access to information and to explore sensitive issues with access to appropriate referral systems. That’s why we thought, what better way to do this than by sharing this resource to girls at schools.

Between February to March, we distributed the ‘Sikmun Storian’ booklet, along with other resources we helped develop like, Nation Builders books I and II with Balance of Power, GO! Cyber Booklet with CARE in Vanuatu and a poster with Information about Sista’s websites and media platforms, to over 15 secondary schools and were well received by the school administration.

Below is the list of schools that we shared the resources with:

  • Malapoa College
  • Lycee de Bouganville
  • Lycee de Monmatre
  • Ecole Francaise
  • Seaside Community School
  • Onesua Presbyterian College
  • Manua junior Secondary School
  • Pikinini Play Time
  • Goodwill School
  • Erakor Bilingual School
  • Freedom School
  • Ecole Publique
  • Tebakor College
  • Ulei Junior Secondary School
  • Sorovango Adventist School
  • Central School
  • Port Vila International School
  • Alliance Francaise (Library)
  • USP (Library)

This was a great opportunity to enable students to access resources in order to make informed and empowered choices. It was also an opportunity for Sista to strengthen our networks with schools so we can work more closely with them in the future.

Menstrual Cup Survey

At Sista we understand the stigma that comes when talking about menstrual health and menstrual products. After research revealed the positive economic and environmental impacts of the menstrual cup, the team decided to trial it with other women to not only share information about this specific menstrual product but also to find out through a survey whether this product would be practical in our communities.

In January 2023, we brought in a total of 60 menstrual cups from a supplier here in Port Vila (link Etam’s social media) and slowly gave them out to women who were interested in trying them. We slowly distributed the menstrual cups over the year and then finally made an official call-out (link call-out from FB) in February 2024 to help distribute the remaining products and emphasize the survey they needed to complete.

Out of the 60 women who received a free menstrual cup, only 43 women filled out our survey and we are currently in the process of finalizing our analysis – we can’t wait to share a summary of our findings with you!

This collaboration with Ambassade de France has been important in our advocacy efforts to promote menstrual health awareness and break the stigma surrounding this topic. We look forward to continuing this important work and making a lasting impact for our women and girls.
