The Police Traffic Unit has recorded a total of 34 careless driving accidents and 13 alcohol-related road accidents in May.

Sergeant Edward Kalura from the Port Vila Police Traffic Unit said the number of alcohol-related accidents increased from 7 in April to 13 last month while careless driving accidents have increased from 22 to 34 in the same period.

Kalura said these accidents involved drivers of public vehicles.

Asked about the cause of the accident involving two buses which occurred on the main road at Stella Marie last Saturday, Sergeant Kalura said it was alcohol-related.

Kalura urged drivers to protect themselves and passengers by obeying traffic rules to avoid getting into unnecessary accidents.

“The Police Traffic Unit needs more resources and manpower to combat the increasing road accidents,” he stressed.
