Vanuatu will have only one female Member of Parliament (MP) in the 14th legislature, the same as the previous legislature.

She is Marie Louise Milne, the former Deputy Mayor of the Port Vila City Council (PVCC) and wife of a former Green Confederation MP Moana Kalosil who contested in the Efate Rural Constituency. Milne contested for the first time in the parliamentary election and emerged victorious.

Thirty-two candidates contested for the five seats in the Port Vila Constituency. Milne secured one of the seats, clearing up confusion from unofficial results suggesting Tony George Yasyas of the Reunification Movement for Change (RMC) had won that seat.

Official results confirmed she secured 1,227 votes, ousting Yasyas with 1,197.The other winning candidates are Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau from the Union of Moderate Parties (2,220), Ralph Regenvanu from Graon mo Jastis Pati (1,895), Leaders Party of Vanuatu’s Jackson Lesa (1,346), and UMP’s Harry Antony Harry (1,306).

Seven women have contested last month’s Snap Election, with Milne being the one elected to Parliament. The only former female MP from Mele village on Efate, Julia Gloria King, contested again but was unable to retain her seat.

According to the Electoral Commission, eight women have contested the 2016, the number increased to 18 in 2020, and dropped to eight in 2022.
