It is an offence for candidates to give out donations or representation allowances to gain votes during the campaign period, says PEO Malessas.

Over 20 proposed candidates still need to settle their government debts before they can be qualified to run in the Snap Election.

This was conveyed by the Principal Electoral Officer (PEO), Guilain Malessas. He said the proposed candidates have until Monday midday to sort out their debts.

The Department of Finance and Treasury has informed that its cashier will be open today and tomorrow from 8am to 5pm for them to settle their debts.

Under the constitution, any person wanting to contest a parliamentary election must not owe money to any government agencies, and must not be serving a prison sentence.

PEO Malessas has reminded political parties, custom movements, and independent candidates that during the campaign, they are not allowed to give out donations or representation allowances to gain votes.

Under the Electoral Act No.16 of 2023, if a Member of Parliament uses any representation allowance for campaign activities, they commit an offence and may be sentenced to up to 5 years in prison, fined up to VT1 million, or both.

Campaign will close on midnight of January 13, two days before election. Throughout this period, political parties are not allowed to engage in activities that could influence votes.

The Electoral Act also stipulates the types of election bribery and the penalties for such actions.

According to the Electoral Office, the ballot draw will happen once all qualified candidates are declared. Election day falls on January 16, which is less than two weeks away.

On Thursday, the Electoral Office announced over 180 qualified candidates, with most fielded by Vanua’aku Pati (VP), followed by Union of Moderate Parties (UMP), Leaders Party of Vanuatu (LPV), Reunification Movement of Change (RMC), Rural Development Party (RDP), Graon mo Jastis Pati (GJP) and Iauko Group (IG).

There are less than 10 female candidates and just over 20 independent candidates.

Apart from the Snap Election, seven candidates will be contesting the Port Vila Northern Ward By-Election.

Two are from UMP, while the others are from RMC, RDP, VP, LPV and GJP.
