The Supreme Court of Vanuatu has two new judges.

Former Public Prosecutor, Josaia Naigulevu and Senior Magistrate Beverleigh Kanas Joshua were appointed recently to manage the work load of the court.

Their appointments were confirmed by the Chief Justice Vincent Lunabek to the Daily Post yesterday.

According to the Lunabek, the appointments were made from a pool of eight applicants, with the selected nominees being Joshua and Naigulevu. He said the eight applicants comprise five locals and three internationals.

The Chief Justice said Mr. Naigulevu was given a 5-year term while Kanas was given a lifetime contract, which means until retirement.

When asked if Vanuatu needs more judges, Lunabek responded that with a group of judges, things can be done, however it’s difficult to have them from time to time since there are lots of conditions and requirements for a person to fit in the Judge criteria.

“It’s a competitive position… that requires the quality and competence of a person,” he said. “The only concern at this point of time is having more judges of the Supreme Court to sit and presides over court proceedings.”

While the Justice System would benefit from more judges, Chief Justice Lunabek highlighted that financial constraints remain a significant challenge.

“It’s a process between the Magistrate and the overall jurisdiction of all courts,” he added
