Vanuatu-Development-Team-eliminated-from-Fijian-Cup

The Vanuatu Rugby Development Team wrapped up their participation in last weekend’s Fijian Cup after being eliminated by top-seeded Namoli Tigers (FIJ) in the quarter-finals.

Despite the early exit, the team’s performance marked an important step forward in their development.

In their tournament debut, the team finished 4th in Pool B, having faced tough competition in the opening matches.

They were defeated 4-10 by Yasawa Saints from Fiji, with Emma Nguyen scoring the only try after a strong 20-meter run to the try line. A 0-14 loss followed against Police Sharks, although standout defensive plays, such as Joanna Kalwatman’s critical tackle, showcased the team’s resilience.

In their final match, they fell to Mt Albert Lionesses from New Zealand 16-26, with Yvanka Kalfen making history as the first VRL player to score a hat-trick in a single match or tournament.

Estella Shem made her debut against Namoli Tigers, contributing to the team’s 6-26 defeat. Although the results highlighted the challenges of the 9s rugby league format, the Vanuatu Rugby League officials remain optimistic about the team’s progress, recognizing their commitment to improving and striving for higher regional standards. The team’s journey was made through the support of sponsors, families, and the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC).
