Vanuatu has increased its medal count to three at the 12th Pacific Mini Games in Palau, following two silver medal wins by its table tennis team.

After earning the country’s first medal — a bronze in the team event on Wednesday — Vanuatu’s table tennis players continued their strong performance with back-to-back podium finishes in the doubles events.

In the mixed doubles, Vanuatu’s ‘Golden Mama’ Anolyn Lulu teamed up with Olympian Yoshua Shing, who returned to the sport after several years away.

The seasoned pair fought their way to the final, finishing just behind Tahiti to bring home the silver with a close 3-2 score in favor of Tahiti.

Lulu also partnered with Tracey Mawa in the women’s doubles. The pair narrowly missed out on gold but delivered another silver for Vanuatu, adding to the nation’s growing success at these Games.

Team Manager Carol Jiren said the achievement was meaningful, considering the challenges the athletes faced leading up to the Games.

“I am very pleased. The players performed with great effort and determination,” Jiren said.

“Despite not having a proper training venue back home due to the earthquake damage, and with just a month of training before we left for Palau, they still made it this far. I am very proud of them.”

The table tennis squad’s grit and resilience have made them standouts in Vanuatu’s campaign, raising hopes for more medals as the competition continues.
