Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA) which was originally located in the centre of Port Vila has moved to the Freshwota 4 clinic and has been receiving over 100 patients daily seeking medical assistance since last month, following the earthquake.

Nurse Leias Obed from VFHA reports that the medical team has been working continuously every day, offering free services to men, children, pregnant women, and even conducting checkup appointments for all individuals.

The services will remain free until the 27th of this month, after which standard fees for checkups will be reinstated. Appointments for contraceptive services for women and girls are also offered at no cost.

VFHA has encountered some challenges; however, its medical team has taken the initiative to provide services every day. For VFHA to conduct community service, approval must be obtained from SHEFA Health through the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) of the Ministry of Health (MoH), as they are responsible for authorising the team’s assistance.

“VFHA, in collaboration with SHEFA Health, has provided free services to the Blacksand community for three days, as this area was significantly impacted by the earthquake,” Obed stated.

“Despite serving a large number of individuals during this recovery phase, we have not experienced a shortage of medicines. “We received feedback from SHEFA Health EOC inquiring about our recovery plan; however, our primary objective is to collaborate with Malapoa clinic and assign one of our nurses there to facilitate easier access to medical services for the residents of the Tanvasako area.”

The clinical services provided by VFHA include medical examinations, reproductive health services, and general health assessments.
