Chairman of Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) Pastor Collin Caleb says while it is right to forgive inmates, they should serve their full term of their sentence first, otherwise it “creates an unhealthy society”, this statement was made moments ago regarding the presidential commutation of 70 inmates.

VCC adds that regardless of custom ceremonies or reconciliations, the law should always be respected and bypassing it could encourage others to commit crimes because the punishment could be commuted in the future.

“You can make pardon but they need to serve their sentence, I don’t know what the reason is, I think that it is unhealthy for the society, Christian belief, you can say sorry, but you need to serve your term first, with this decision, it will encourage others to do wrong because the law isn’t strong.”

Pastor Collin says the inmates broke the law and thus need to pay the price, forgiveness aside, “the criminals broke the law, they disturbed the peace.”
