Transparency International Vanuatu (TIV) has emphasised that it and its partners are providing voter education, leadership code training, and civic education — not political campaigning.

“Currently, our TIV staff, alongside some Office of the Ombudsman staff, Officers from the Right to Information (RTI) Office, and Vanuatu Electoral Office (VEO) Officers, are in rural areas presenting civic education with correct and up-to-date information,” said TIV Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Willie Tokon. “We inform citizens of their rights, especially the Right to Information, the importance of voting freely, and voting for the right candidate, while clarifying many voting processes. We are not talking about politics. We are empowering citizens with information so they can make informed choices, access correct and up-to-date information, and hold their leaders accountable.

“We elect and appoint our leaders to manage public funds and provide services to everyone in the country. Therefore, we must expect our leaders to adhere to the Leadership Code and be accountable to us, the voters.

“It is important to engage our leaders, in particular Members of Parliament (MPs) and Councillors, including all those in senior posts, who are among the 500 leaders listed under the Leadership Code. It is our duty to help all voters understand their right to select the most suitable candidates and to use community allocations to fund local development in the provinces.”

The CEO also thanked MPs and Councillors for following TIV’s weekly press releases in the Vanuatu Daily Post.

“In terms of the VEO, we are informing voters that casting their votes is their right, and they must vote for the right candidates. Our past leaders fought for this right to vote freely, and some lost their lives for it. A single vote has the power to make change,” said Dr Tokon.

Vanuatu National Youth Council (VNYC) staff and volunteers are part of the awareness team because they are the leaders of tomorrow. They need to learn and educate their peers about values such as honesty, fairness, integrity, transparency, and concern for the community.

A dynamic TIV team, comprising staff from the Ombudsman’s Office, VNYC, the RTI Office, and TIV itself, has already covered Pentecost and Malekula and is now working in Epi.
