A six-month programme aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs in Espiritu Santo has helped several small business owners strengthen and expand their ventures, with at least one participant already launching a new company following the training.

The Santo Women in Business Programme, funded by the Government of Canada, supported 15 women entrepreneurs who had already started small businesses in Luganville and surrounding areas. The initiative provided training in business and financial management, personalised coaching sessions, networking opportunities and a field trip to a woman-led enterprise to give participants practical experience and inspiration.

Participants represented a wide range of businesses, from retail shops and clothing outlets to event services and tent rentals. Fifteen of the businesses were based in Luganville, while one participant operated from Vimele in South Santo.

The programme was designed not only to strengthen existing enterprises but also to encourage women to identify business opportunities within their communities. Organisers said the training helped participants develop new ideas and improve their financial and management skills.

One of the programme’s most notable success stories comes from a young mother from Vimele who previously ran a small takeaway business selling chicken and chips while also baking cakes for village celebrations. She joined the programme hoping to expand her operations by purchasing additional equipment.

Together with her husband, who attended the training sessions with her, the couple began applying the knowledge gained during the programme. They consulted members of their community and explored the possibility of launching a larger business that could serve wider local needs.

Their efforts eventually led to the creation of Patvuti Company Ltd, which officially launched a hardware business on January 29, 2026.

“The programme offered training in business and financial management, personalised coaching sessions and networking opportunities that provided both inspiration and practical learning for the participants,” organisers said.

They added that the story of Patvuti Company Ltd demonstrates how training, mentorship and community collaboration can help small entrepreneurs transform their ideas into sustainable businesses.

Other women entrepreneurs who took part in the programme include Santo Creatives, Fai Massage Santo, DMKs Clothing Shop, The Tropical Hub, Makya, Santo Daily Events and Party Rentals, and Santodiscovery Moringa Oil.

With support from the Canadian Government, organisers say the initiative has helped participating women strengthen their businesses and inspired others across Santo to explore new opportunities.

“These women have not only grown their businesses but are also inspiring others across Santo to dream bigger, take risks and build enterprises that strengthen their communities,” the programme organisers said.
