Four young athletes from Vanuatu have reached an important milestone in their volleyball careers by participating in their first regional tournament.

The athletes were selected from a youth training camp held in January in Port Vila and will compete in two major tournaments as part of their development.

Vanuatu’s national coach, Miller Pata, a former champion player, will oversee Team Vanuatu during the FIVB Futures hit-out.

Pata will accompany two of the athletes, Jennifer Tom and Monick John, to Australia for the prestigious Youth Championships, which is scheduled from March 24 to 27 at Coolangatta Beach, Queensland, Australia.

The event is part of Volleyball Australia’s VolleySlam, featuring 655 teams across four tournaments over a span of 10 days.

Assistant Coach Manu Maki and team manager Pelagie Maho will guide Karol Suvtekmag and Rahanna Taribakeo to the Oceania U18 Championship in New Caledonia from April 6 to 9.

Tom and John are already in Australia and have been training three days a week under the guidance of senior coaches from the Vanuatu Volleyball Federation (VVF). Karol and Rahanna are continuing their training back home, with Pata playing an active role in overseeing their progress.

For several years, Pata has focused on the development of young Vanuatu athletes, recognizing the importance of nurturing their sporting potential.

The VVF has long prioritized the development of young players through to the senior ranks. However, in 2024, the federation took it a step further by making the Athlete Performance Program a high priority.

This initiative aims to deepen the player pool in anticipation of a packed competition calendar leading up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

These tournaments not only serve as valuable exposure for the athletes but also promote youth development within the sport regionally.

The youth championships and the Oceania U18 Championship are key events for fostering talent and giving young players the opportunity to compete at a high level.

In addition to these promising young athletes, senior team members Majabelle Lawac and Sherysyn Toko will be participating in the FIVB Futures Pro Beach Tour event from March 27 to 30.

The participation of Vanuatu’s players has been made possible through Olympic Solidarity grants provided by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), ensuring a high-profile platform for the athletes.

Vanuatu Volleyball also acknowledges its major sponsor, Titan FX Vanuatu, for their continued support of both the national team and the athlete development program.
