A man is currently in remand after appearing in court on Saturday following a tragic domestic incident in Teouma that left his wife dead and two vehicles destroyed by fire.

Information obtained by the Vanuatu Daily Post from the Department of Corrections identified the suspect as John Iaris Iauko from Tanna.

Corrections officials confirmed he is currently in custody and remains traumatised following the incident.

They further stated that his full admission process could not be completed at the time and will continue today.

He is believed to be in his 50s and remains on remand as investigations continue.

Reliable sources indicated that the weapon allegedly used in the incident was a .22 calibre rifle.

The suspect appeared in court on Saturday, the same day as the incident, where he was formally remanded at the correctional centre.

The Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) confirmed that the suspect was arrested shortly after allegedly shooting his wife.

The firearm used in the incident has since been seized and is now in police custody.

A VPF police truck and a public transport vehicle were also set alight during the incident.

Police Commissioner Kalshem Bongran described the case as deeply distressing.

“This is a deeply distressing case that has shaken our community. The VPF is committed to ensuring justice is served and that the safety of the public remains our highest priority,” he said.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement.

The Vanuatu Daily Post attempted to obtain details on the charges laid against the suspect, but this information was not available at the time of publication.

Further details have yet to be released as police investigations continue.
