For this week’s Champions Profile, we’re looking at Winona Kalpukai, a 27-year-old Vanuatu Rugby League player that played for Pango in 2019 and Port Vila Warriors 2021.

The National Administration and Finance Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization plays Prop and Centre and was inspired by her father, Kaltaliu Kalpukai, who played for the Men’s Rugby League Team for the Pango Warriors in the 1980s.

The Pango rugger faced a lot of self-doubt but continued to work hard to develop her rugby skills.

“I consistently strive to master rugby drills, make good tackles, handle the ball professionally and improve fitness in order to develop myself, I am grateful to my coaches and teammates for their support in helping me overcome these challenges, I feel confident now in my abilities,” she said.

In 2023, she Captained the National Women’s Rugby team, representing Vanuatu in South Pacific Games in Solomon Islands.

This accomplishment was important, as she held the captain title for both National Team and the Port Vila Warriors Team, in addition to coaching U18 Pango Girls, now she can’t wait for team to make it to the Fiji Cup Championship at the end of this Year November 2024.

She revealed that becoming captain, much like her father before her, has fulfilled a lifelong dream, and she is committed to empowering other women and girls in rugby to step beyond their comfort zones and overcome barriers.

Winona consistently viewed National Rugby League (NRL) videos and hoped that in five years, Vanuatu would witness the outcome of talented women and girls in rugby league.

She pictures a future where everyone would realize the principles of ‘ACE’ (Attitude, Commitment and Effort) to help the growth and development of women in rugby.

“Do not hesitate, I understand that rugby is a contact sport, but once you grab the concepts of the game, it may seem challenging, yet it is rewarding, embrace the experience, enjoy yourself, and make new friendships,” she said.

“You will not regret it, taking small steps will lead you to greater heights and accomplishment.”

Winona’s aspiration is to motivate more women and girls to pursue their passion and maintain a positive mindset towards achieving their goals.
