Life-After-Sports--Vivian-Obed

This week’s ‘Life after Sports’, features Vivian Obed, a 46-year-old resident of Paama Island. She is married to Senior Police Officer Dicky George Obed and is the mother of five children, comprising four daughters and one son.

She currently holds the position of General Manager (GM) at Further Arts; however, she began her professional journey at the young age of 17.

Initially, she participated in workshops, and subsequently, in 1997, she secured a role as the youngest Ni-Van researcher for the Young People’s Project (YPP) at the Vanuatu Cultural Center.

In 1997, serving as a Field researcher presented significant challenges for her, as it necessitated extensive travel to different islands, villages, and towns.

Her research focused on understanding how individuals coexist with their cultures. Additionally, she often encountered regions that were difficult to access, requiring her to transport her research materials on foot.

GM of Further Arts Vivian Obed, states that her extensive training and participation in workshops with individuals from different countries have significant enhanced her skills.

This experience has also bolstered her confidence in assisting young people to achieve their goals in the realms of culture, media and research.

“My early career would have been considerably more challenging without the influence of sport. I have traversed hills, valleys, and arduous paths without hesitation, drawing upon my inner strength,” she said.

“I have assumed the role of team leader during assignments to various islands for project, where I have developed skills in team management, effective communication, and a strong commitment to collaboration with others.”

Obed advises young individuals to reduce their use of phones and to seek opportunities outside of classrooms and homes in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

She reflects on her own experience, noting that during her youth, when technology was less prevalent, she engages in sports primarily for enjoyment where she’s a player, coach and a ref and also social interaction with friends.

In contract, she observes that it is increasingly rare to see young people participating in athletic activities today.

Pleasant in sports fosters a positive mindset, enabling individuals to enhance their personal development and work towards their goals, she concluded.
