A student from Onesua Presbyterian College (OPC), Winnie Tobu, clinched the gold medal for Team Port Vila in the girls’ open javelin category at the National Athletics Championships yesterday.

Tobu impressed with a strong opening throw of 21.70 meters — a mark that held firm throughout the competition.

Despite having three attempts, it was her very first throw that secured her the top podium spot.

Winnie was speechless when she was told that she came first. She was happy to have represented her school and to make her teachers, friends and family proud.

Among the officials present was Ken Kahu, Vanuatu’s only para javelin thrower, known for his personal best of 54 meters.

He commended Winnie’s performance and the potential shown by young athletes. “There’s definitely talent here,” Kahu remarked. “With proper training and support, we can boost their performance and take things to the next level.”

The Korman Stadium was packed with a good crowd of supporters and family who turned up for the 2- day event which begun on Thursday and ended yesterday.
