This week, the Department of Passport Vanuatu began offering a mobile kit enrolment service at Vila Central Hospital (VCH) to assist patients who are unable to visit passport offices in person. Director Jeffrey Markson confirmed the initiative during an interview with the Vanuatu Daily Post yesterday.

Director Markson said the IT team and officers visited the hospital on Tuesday to enrol a teenage girl who was unwell. Her parents had requested a passport in anticipation of possible medical travel abroad, pointing to the urgent need for such a service.

“This mobile enrolment can be used by anyone who provides certification of their medical condition,” Mr. Markson said. “Our team took photos and recorded all necessary information for the patient on Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday, we had delivered the passport directly to the hospital. This service is available to anyone in similar circumstances who requests it.”

For families dealing with medical emergencies, the service offers more than just convenience—it can be a lifeline.

Fern Napwatt, mother of the teenage patient, thanked the department for its swift and compassionate support.

“With my daughter so sick, we simply didn’t have the time or strength to go through the usual passport process,” Ms Napwatt said. “This service has lifted a huge burden off our shoulders. Knowing that help came to us when we needed it most means the world.”

Mr. Markson said the department understands how difficult it can be for families in crisis to manage paperwork and travel arrangements. The mobile kit, he said, reflects their effort to serve the community with care and efficiency.

The Department of Passport is encouraging any family with a member who requires overseas travel for medical reasons to contact them and request the mobile enrolment service. The department remains committed to making passport services accessible and responsive.

This initiative ensures no one is left behind—especially when urgent travel documents can make the difference in accessing vital medical care abroad.

All applicable fees remain the same for this service.
