President of the Shefa Basketball League (SBL), Mildred Izono, will lead the Vanuatu women’s basketball team to the FIBA Women’s Melanesian Cup in Honiara, Solomon Islands, next month.
The tournament marks a full-circle moment for Izono, who was part of the historic squad that clinched Vanuatu’s first bronze medal in the 2009 Melanesian Cup held in Port Vila.
Now, as team leader, she is guiding a new generation of players with the hope of bringing home another medal.
“It has been over a decade since we last claimed a victory,” she said.
“But this time, if we win bronze or even a silver or gold, that would be even better.” Despite the ambition, she emphasized that the team’s primary goal remains a podium finish with bronze.
The FIBA Women’s Melanesian Cup is a crucial event on the regional basketball calendar, organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
It serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti, with the top two teams from the tournament securing a coveted spot.
Izono expressed strong confidence in the national squad, noting past successes where Vanuatu’s teams reached 7th place at the Pacific Games, a testament to the nation’s talent and competitive spirit.
“We have proven our potential before, and I believe we can do it again in the Solomon Islands,” she said.
However, she did not shy away from highlighting the challenges facing the team—particularly the lack of adequate facilities and financial resources in Port Vila.
She called on government stakeholders, business houses, and the broader community to support the national representatives both morally and financially.
Both the women’s and men’s national teams are deep in preparations, engaging in regular scrimmages and intensive training under the guidance of national head coach Sam Lewis.
The full Vanuatu contingent consists of 24 players and 4 coaches/officials, with the teams scheduled to depart on October 12.
The FIBA Women’s Melanesian Cup will run from October 13 to 17, with Vanuatu set to face Papua New Guinea on match day one.
As the countdown begins, Izono and her squad are focused on not just representing the nation, but also inspiring the next generation of female athletes across Vanuatu.
