A series of surfing development courses held in Vanuatu last week by the Vanuatu Surfing Association (VSA) has not only strengthened local skills but also exceeded targets for female participation.

The week-long program, delivered by coaches Lee Ryan and Michel Bourez from the International Surfing Association (ISA), trained a total of 45 participants across three courses such as judging, coaching and instructing and water safety.

VSA President, Michael Barthelmess, said female participation reached 35 percent, surpassing the initial goal of at least 30 percent aimed at increasing opportunities for women and girls in surfing.

The training was organized by the VSA in partnership with the ISA and Olympic Solidarity, and took place at Pango, a well-known hub for surfing in Vanuatu.

Participants engaged in specialized courses in judging, coaching and instructing, and water safety.

The initiative focused on building capacity within the local surfing community, particularly among young people, while promoting greater inclusion.

According to VSA, the courses combined theory and practical learning in an engaging and supportive environment. Activities throughout the week included a film screening and a competition, allowing participants to apply their new skills.

President Barthelmess said the association also hosted a special evening event to welcome the visiting ISA team, featuring a screening of a Vanuatu VELA episode filmed by John John Florence the American professional surfer from Hawaii during his visit to the country last year.

“We had a great night welcoming the ISA team, along with a viewing and a competition that allowed participants to put into practice what they had learned,” he said.

The association also acknowledged the ongoing support of the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee for its commitment to youth development through sport.

As the program concluded, coaches Ryan and Bourez departed Port Vila expressing their appreciation for the local community, with organizers describing the initiative as a successful effort in developing talent and empowering the next generation of surfers in Vanuatu.
