April was full of collaboration and networking. The Sista team worked together to build up the representation of ni-Vanuatu women on the regional stage, as well as supporting women from across Vanuatu to do the same.

April showed us the power of working together to lift us all up.

Sista’s work on eliminating gender-based violence and harmful gender stereotypes

The month started with members of the Sista team, alongside a representative from the Vanuatu Women’s Centre, receiving training from Erin Thomas on how to use the newly developed ‘TrackGBV Dashboard’, developed by ICAAD (International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination). ICAAD is an international human rights organization that works on gender justice, human rights advocacy, technology, and legal reform, particularly supporting marginalized communities and civil society organizations in the Pacific through research, training, and evidence-based advocacy.

The Dashboard is a research and data tool that tracks and analyses how courts handle gender-based violence (GBV) cases across Pacific Island countries. The dashboard reviews court decisions on issues such as domestic violence, rape, and sexual offences to identify patterns of gender bias, harmful stereotypes, and sentencing trends.

Sista’s work on advancing women’s leadership and representation

Early in April, Sista was part of the finalisation of the Vanuatu Women’s Festival Call to Action. The Call to Action is a strategic framework outlining the top 3 priority actions to be focused on between 2026-2030. These actions will be monitored to ensure they are being implemented and achieved in line with the desired timeline and to contribute to the National Gender Equality Policy 2020 2030 (NGEP) and Provincial Gender Equality Action Plans.

After all the work that went into the event and development of the Call to Action, the team is so glad that it is out there for everyone to read. Read it here!

Sista’s work on strengthening the feminist movement in Vanuatu and the Pacific to progress gender equality

Throughout April, members of the Sista team were preparing to attend the Women Deliver Conference in Melbourne at the end of the month. The conference brought together over 6000 representatives from across 189 countries to discuss and advocate for gender equality.

In preparation for the Women Deliver Conference, Sista coordinated a gathering of the Vanuatu delegates on the 14th of April. The focus was on sharing information and discussing how the group could leverage the Vanuatu Women’s Festival Call to Action, as well as coordinating the nitty-gritty of the logistics for attending the conference itself and the multiple speaking events the delegates were a part of.

CARE Vanuatu, the British High Commission, Vanuatu Family Health Association, VPride, Port Vila National Council of Women, Reach Famili Senta, and other representatives attended the pre-meeting with Sista and agreed on unified approaches to attending sessions, a communications plan focal point, and a general plan for the conference events. The meeting definitely got everyone feeling the excitement in the lead up to the event.

On April 27th, the Women Deliver Conference finally kicked off! Sista’s Executive Director (Yasmine), Communications and Advocacy Coordinator (Elsie), and Program Manager (Josepheen) represented the Sista team. Alongside the Vanuatu delegation, the team contributed to important conversations on gender equality, feminist leadership, and social justice in the Pacific.

Yasmine engaged in high-level discussions and participated in side sessions and plenaries alongside global leaders, advocates, partners, donors and policymakers. Josepheen contributed to panel discussions focused on young women in leadership and homegrown feminist movements, sharing Pacific perspectives and community-driven approaches to change while. Elsie served as the communications focal point for the Vanuatu delegation, ensuring that the delegation’s participation, key moments, and experiences throughout Women Deliver were documented and shared. She followed delegates as they engaged in conversations and discussions that reflected women’s experiences in Vanuatu and shared it all as it was happening to keep everyone back home updated and feeling included and represented. Elsie was also instrumental in developing the media release from the Vanuatu delegation at the close of the conference, you can read that here! Together, the team helped amplify the voices and experiences of ni-Vanuatu women and feminist movements on an international platform.

Following the end of the Women Deliver conference on April 30th, Josepheen stayed in Melbourne to attend the International Women’s Development Agency’s (IWDA) Partners Workshop. Bringing over 20 regional partners together, the workshop asked participants to reflect on their experiences at Women Deliver, share movement-building strategies, and explore opportunities for collaboration, advocacy, and feminist organising. Josepheen gained valuable knowledge about the work of other IWDA partner organisations, their advocacy priorities, and the social, political, and cultural challenges they navigate in advancing gender justice within their communities that will help Sista as we grow and develop our own activities and processes.

Sista’s work on building a resilient, locally-led, feminist organisation

In April, Sista signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CARE Vanuatu. This MOU will continue to strengthen our partnership with CARE, and reaffirms both organisations’ commitments to advancing gender equality, disability inclusion, and the inclusion of marginalised groups across Vanuatu. Both Sista and CARE are committed to working together in mutual respect and trust, strengthening cooperation through the sharing of ideas, information, and resources. The team at Sista is excited to foster this continued relationship.

As we worked our way through April, we got closer and closer to when our Project Coordinator, Rosina, started her maternity leave! Even though she wouldn’t be leaving for long, Rosina made sure to handover all her tasks to ensure a smooth transition and continuity during her absence.

Her final projects before her leave were completing the first drafts of the ‘From Survival To Strength’ booklet and finalising the emergency grab bags for the Sista team. This initiative was supported by the Urgent Action Fund. A total of eight bags were prepared—seven for core staff and one for the office and include emergency supplies, as well as contacts and other necessary items everyone may need during an emergency. The bags will be stored in the Sista office and will be accessible to staff during emergencies.

Ensuring our staff are supported in work and life is such an important part of how Sista operates, and what we value. While we may miss Rosina for a little while, we are so excited for her as she gets to experience her family growing, knowing we have her back.

Announcements and Media

This month, the Sista podcast team recorded the final Round Table Podcast episode.

Episode 6 featured a conversation with Williamson Emmanuel Kalpokas, unpacking his perspectives on social media, masculinity, faith, and the challenges facing young men in Vanuatu today. Drawing from personal experience, he reflects on how upbringing, peer influence, and online spaces shape identity, behaviour, and relationships. The conversation also explores discipline, personal growth, positive role models, and the realities of navigating adulthood as a young Ni-Vanuatu man.

WATCH IT NOW on the Vanuatu Daily Post website, or our YouTube channel.

We are so proud of the Sista team and everyone who worked on making this podcast series such a success. The conversations we had and the stories we heard were enlightening and taught us all something new every time.
