ActionAid Vanuatu (AAV) seeks to assist 700 women and girls with disabilities, as well as single mothers and pregnancy mothers, in rural communities during the disaster response assessment.
Following the earthquake, AAV successfully reached more than 300 women and girls with disabilities, focusing on ensuring their safety and addressing the essential need of women within their households.
The assessment conducted two weeks ago focused on communities that include members of the Women I TokTok Tugeta (WITTT) Sunshine Group, comprising Melemaat, Ohlen Mataso, Ohlen Freshwind, Tagabe Bridge, and the outskirts of Port Vila, East Efate, and Nguna offshore island.
Local food supplies for the disaster response were sourced from WITTT in the Epau, Eton, and Pangpang communities.
The team distributed food rations, which included buckets of crackers, rice, water bottles, sugar, peanut butter, cooking oil, and additional essential items such as Panadol for families experiencing body aches, along with dignity bags.
Flora Vano, the Country Manager of AAV, stated that the organization has established a network of WITTT in communities that requested assistance, ensuring that the response is tailored to their needs.
“What we have provided is precisely what they require at this moment, and they express their heartfelt appreciation,” she remarked.
“They also wish to receive training on women-led community-based protection tools so that they can better prepare their homes, communities, and villages for future climate crises.”
This response activity was carried out by the AAV and WITTT teams, with support from Australian Humanitarian Partnership.
AAV has commended ActionAid Australia for its ongoing assistance and support to AAV and the community.
