Dedication, sacrifice and hard work paid off for the Ovins women’s rugby 7s team as they won the ABM sponsored Vanuatu rugby 7s tournament women’s division at Independence Park yesterday.

Ovins thumped Shepherds 19-0 to win the prize money for the women’s division.

Bolstering the side were the Vanuatu national women’s core players and two Fijian players captain Sisi Roqara and Amele Gavidi.

Team skipper Roqara believes their two months hard work has finally paid off and also acknowledged their head coach Pita Natoga.

“We know the win is the result of our hard work we have been doing for the past two months with our coach Pita.

“We thank our coach for assisting us we saw new drills he taught us this year. It was different from our previous coach and it has boosted our rugby knowledge to another level,” she said.

Despite only two womens teams registered for yesterday’s tourney the Ovins women did not give up in showcasing their rugby talents yesterday.

“We saw only two teams were registered but we were not disheartened because we have prepared well and we want to play.

“Now we are looking forward to the next tournament.”

Roqara believes it’s about time women’s rugby in Vanuatu to be taken seriously for the numbers to grow and for teams to be competitive.
